Finding the Palouse Prairie

I spent the better part of two years getting lost on the dirt roads of northwestern Idaho in search of the small, broken fragments of a forgotten grassland. It is said that less than 1% of the Palouse Prairie remains, plowed under to make room for some of the most productive wheat farming on the planet. But what does remain offers clues to the region’s rich natural history and the building blocks, however small, for future restoration.
